When it feels like spring has been a long time coming the advent of longer daylight hours and warming sunshine is enough to convince us that the tide has finally turned. When you can see early spring blossom on the trees, new life springing forth from formerly frozen ground and you hear the birds singing ever louder, the urge to spruce up our homes becomes suddenly compelling.
Fill Your Home with Colour
Spring is traditionally a time of new beginnings which is why we feel the need to clean from top to bottom and to turn out all the dark and dusty corners. It is also a time to redecorate and thoughts turn away from dark, winter colour schemes to bright, cheery ones. The colours of springtime are vibrant; the bright yellow of the daffodil, the red and orange hues of the tulip and the rich velvety yellows, pinks and violets of the spring pansy. A plain glass vase filled with daffodils or tulips from the garden adds an instant boost to any room and a pot full of hyacinths can fragrance the whole house.
It’s time to bring out your most cheerful crockery. We think our Pink Pansy Teacup and Saucer in a distinctive Emma Bridgewater design is too beautiful to serve tea in but displayed next to a Pink Pansy Half Pint Mug it makes an absolutely gorgeous talking point.
And you don’t need to wait for Easter to come round with our very sweet Pastel Garden Chick Egg Cup by Gisela Graham. Build up a whole flock of hens and chicks with items from our latest spring range. From hanging French Hen decorations to a Chicken themed Pot Mitt, these cheery feathered friends will make you smile.
If you’re not ready for a full-on redecorating job, then ring the changes with your soft furnishings. By simply swapping your heavy winter-themed cushions and rugs for lighter fabrics in cheerier colours you can alter the whole feel of a room instantly without too much effort.
Spring Greens
The other colour of spring is undoubtedly green. The rich emerald green of newly unfurled leaves denotes new life. We think our Botanical Fern Round Coasters are perfect accompaniments to those long cool evening drinks or a refreshing cup of tea after a hard days’ gardening. Team these with the RHS Foliage Linen Tea Towel. The pretty design, vibrant colours and striking detail will add a touch of class to your kitchen.
Carry on the green theme into your decor. Trends for this year include bold jungle prints and traditional country themes. Big, willowy plants make a striking contrast against a plain white wall. If bringing tropical plants into your home is not feasible you can always fake it by creating your own artwork by framing a piece of tropical themed wallpaper or fabric.
Spring Fresh
Spring is also a time of freshness, a time for throwing open the windows and letting in the aroma of new growth and new beginnings. Bring the outside in by placing reed diffusers or scented candles around the house. Whether you prefer flowery fragrances or spicier aromas the choice is yours. We think the distinctive scent of vanilla is a classic daytime aroma which works very well in a reed diffuser while the richer, Yankee Candle Cinnamon Stick Candle Jar is perfect for creating an evening of relaxation.
No scent is more evocative of springtime than the aroma of newly mown grass. Whether you have a lawn or not you can bring the sweet scent of fresh grass and lemon into your home with our Woodwick Candle Mini Lemongrass. This high-quality product has the unusual advantage of emitting the sound of a crackling log fire when they are burning; perfect for those long evenings on the patio or in the garden.
Although the humble dandelion may be a tad unwelcome in the garden, as a pretty and delicate decoration on our Grey Dandelion Votive Holder it redeems itself admirably. This pretty porcelain item from Shruti Designs is available in four different colours and a lovelier scented candle holder you would be hard pressed to find.
All Creatures Great and Small
Another sure sign of spring is of course the bunny rabbit as he makes more tentative forays away from his burrow. Make your little one smile with our Brown Jute Bunny. These are so cute though you may be tempted to keep one for yourself. After all, a bunny is for life, not just for Easter!
You can consider yourself lucky if you catch a fleeting glimpse of the hare in March for this is an elusive creature indeed. Console yourself instead with our RSPCA Hare Cushion. In a classic navy blue colour, the cushion features dancing hares and best of all the RSPCA animal charity benefits with every cushion sold.
If you prefer something rather larger and fluffier and you have a yearning for the glorious Highlands of Scotland then what better than a wall calendar featuring magnificent Highland Cattle by acclaimed photographer Michael MacGregor.
Refresh Your Wardrobe
Spring is a great time to sort out your wardrobe – especially after the first flush of sunshine hits and you finally get to turn off the central heating. There’s nothing better than being able to at last pack away your winter woollies and get out your warm weather clothes. Why not treat yourself to a wardrobe update?
