The summer holidays are officially here, well in Scotland at least, and all this unexpected sunshine in usually rainy Argyll has got us all on the al fresco dining train.
There are so many fantastic picnic spots a short walk or drive away from Lochgilphead. Along the canal bank, the front green on our doorstep, the rugged castle grounds of Carnasserie or one of the stunning beaches nearby like Kilmory beach or Crinan Ferry, all perfect for picnics, weather permitting! So we find the trick is to be ready for when we do get warm weather and then all you have to do is throw your kit in the car and enjoy!
First on the list should always be a picnic blanket – even if your dining destination has benches, a blanket can be handy to stretch out on afterwards or to wrap up in if there’s a breeze. We love this beautiful Shruti Highland Muted blanket as it’s beautifully soft and versatile.
The next essential item is a cool box or bag to keep everything perfectly preserved. We highly recommend the large cool bags from eco-chic, like this vintage bike design, as they are lightweight and fold down into a neat pouch when not in use. We do also love the Wicker Print Wine Cooler from kikkerland, which obviously doesn’t have to be used for wine.. but it seems a shame not to!
On that note though, it is important to stay hydrated in the warmer weather, so maker sure you fill up a couple of reusable water bottles before you head out. We have a great range from glass bottles with cooling sleeves, to stainless steel flasks like this cute Chasing Rainbows Water Bottle from Sass and Belle. And in case you didn’t know, you can now fill up for free in our sandwich bar as we have become an official Refill.org Refill station. Of course, if you aren’t local to us then you can find your nearest refill station on the go using their app, perfect for saving money, staying hydrated and reducing plastic all at once. Another great way of reducing plastic is to avoid plastic wrap and sandwich bags as you prepare your nibbles. Sealable tubs are the best way to go and they can be washed and used time and time again. This set of three Dino Bites Lunch Boxes are perfect as they can all stack back inside each other when you’re finished too!
The last thing you should always remember to include is something fun for the kids (and big kids!) There are certain activities that are guaranteed to bring the fun factor to any outdoor gathering – the humble football, frisbee or kite are all timeless classics when it comes bringing people together. This mini kite from the house of marbles is a winner, as although it stores away very neatly, it still unfolds to be an impressive full-size kite.
Now all that is missing is the food, and unfortunately, that’s up to you! If you’re still looking for more al fresco-friendly products then take a look at our picnics collection on the website.
